Poverest Primary School
“The big change I noticed as a class teacher was the enthusiasm for learning spellings and the weekly hive game was anticipated with excitement from the children.”Case Study
Spelling is a vital, core skill within literacy. Spelling is part of reading, writing and central to word knowledge. Our game makes practising spelling fun and children love to play it. Designed by teachers, our product aligns with the national curriculum and delivers real educational progress. It has also proven to be especially effective for children with dyslexia.
As well as spelling, our product supports phonics, vocabulary, punctuation, grammar and reading comprehension. Our scheme of work and teaching slides give a complete curriculum resource and our games can be played in class, remotely or hybrid.
Our game allows children to enjoy spelling practice with a level of scaffolding that they are comfortable with. Word lists can be chosen from our pre-made lists or be created manually giving complete flexibility as well as convenience. In our main game, children start by seeing and hearing their word before being shown just the letters they need. As difficulty increases, less support is given up to “Extreme” mode where just a qwerty style keyboard is shown and proper capitalization is required.
Our game supports phonics word lists which enable younger children to use their phonemic awareness skills to build words with graphemes as well as single letters. This unique solution helps children progress gently from phonetic reading and spelling strategies and develop automaticity.
As well as our main spelling game, we have a number of bonus games. These build on vocabulary and grammar skills as well as consolidating knowledge and just having a bit of fun!
Our scheme of work gives an organised progression through 100% of the National Curriculum. It includes 36 weekly spelling lists with lesson plans and printable activities to supplement our game. Accompanying each lesson plan is a PowerPoint to help teach each spelling rule so our resources can be used for direct teaching or as a supplement for home learning.
Each week you would teach the spelling rule and assign the relevant word list for pupils to play in our game. Then, at the end of each week you can play a live “Hive Game” to act as an assessment but with far more fun than a standard spelling test.
Our SPAG scheme of work provides teaching slides organised into: Word, Sentence, Text and Punctuation learning objectives. Each lesson includes a PowerPoint and quiz question set to allow you to teach and consolidate the respective skills
By leveraging technology, our platform enables learning to happen anywhere and everywhere. Our game just requires a device. With our app, an internet connection is not even required as long as the required word lists have been loaded first.
Many schools use our platform in school, particularly those with 1-2-1 devices. Others use our game as a part of home learning to consolidate the skills they have taught in school. However, any combination works and even Hive Games can be run with a mixture of local and remote players.
For self-directed play, children can create their own multiplayer hive games to play with friends. Challenges give specific tasks for groups of learners to work towards and our leagues provide a way to recognise achievement within a class or whole school.
As pupils play, our system tracks their game plays and answers. For each pupil and group, reporting shows how much activity there has been in our system to monitor participation. A separate report shows attainment and progression for word lists. Our system also gives a snapshot of words spelled over the past week to enable immediate remedial list creation.
Much of the management of our system is run through assignments and hive games so, as you would expect, each has specific reporting to monitor participation and attainment.
