K Scope

Kindergarten: The first three lists cover the 15 high-frequency words (HFWs) that make up about 25% of all texts. These HFWs can be taught after they know letter names and before formal phonics instruction begins. There are two suggested scope and sequences you can choose from. The partially decodable HFW (Buzz/Heart words) lists can be used in isolation as a single weekly list (Scope and Sequence 1), or teachers can use them alongside the weekly decodable lists (Scope and Sequence 2). 1st Grade Scope

1st Grade: Thirteen partially decodable high-frequency words are included in List 1. We recommend teaching 2-3 words alongside the weekly lists during the 1st nine weeks. There are additional partially decodable words included in the weekly lists that correspond to a decodable part of the word. See more about partially decodable HFWs in the 1st Grade Curriculum FAQ. There are two suggested scope and sequences you can choose from. It is advised to use caution if/when teaching ‘blends’ because it can amplify the amount of code knowledge children have to learn. Scope and Sequence 1teaches blends in a condensed version, and only focuses on HFWs that are blends. It is recommended that explicit ‘blends’ instruction should be used as an intervention for students who are struggling and have fallen behind. For this reason, we have included Scope and Sequence 2which allows for extended exposure to words with blends. *It is important to be very clear that ‘blends’ have individual phonemes so students do not confuse them with a single sound.
